Communication is the spreading of information and ideas between people. Plasma televisions (and flat screen TVs in general) are extremely easy to handle. Due to their very nature, plasmas are flatter than traditional televisions (also called CRTs) and thus, are lighter as well. Currently averaging 5 inches in width and 100 pounds, their size will soon be reduced to an inch in width and 45 pounds. This lack of bulk has heralded in a new era of television placement; consumers can now mount their plasmas on the wall without worrying about ruining the wall.

Flat screen televisions cover a range of much higher resolutions than do traditional televisions. High definition plasmas and LCDs have resolutions from 1024×768 pixels per square inch to 1920×1080 pixels. The ceiling of resolution for CRTs stands at a mere 480 lines, providing a much more muddled picture than plasmas or LCDs do.

Plasmas even last longer than other types of televisions. Manufacturers and companies stress that an average plasma television has a life span of 60,000 hours. In older models of plasma TVs, the burn-in effect posed a significant problem. When an image (for example, a paused movie) is kept on the screen for too long, the image could be burned into the screen and still faintly visible afterwards. Plasma TV companies have worked to eradicate this problem with much success; while it is still possible for images to burn in, on newer plasmas the possibility is almost negligible.

Unlike tube or LCD TVs, plasma TVs are not limited in size. Consumers (with large enough budgets) can order plasmas up to any size. However, CRTs and LCDs are usually restricted to about 52 inches in diagonal.

Before you finalize your plans for placement, make a mock-up. The box your set was packed in is perfect for this task. Cut a piece of cardboard the same approximate size as your set. Tape or tack it into place where you think you are going to want to mount the TV, and then see how it looks from the position you will likely be when watching it.

Make sure you can position wall mounts on studs. The TV will need the support to hold its weight, and mounts that are placed in sheet-rock can soon work free. Most walls have studs every sixteen inches. If you need help locating them, you can buy or borrow a stud finder. Mark them in some manner once you have found the ones you will need to use.

Choose mounting brackets carefully. There are a lot of different kinds on the market, but they do not all fit every set. Depending on the style, you will need to know the screen size, manufacturer, and possibly even the model before you can select the proper mounts.

Swivel wall mounts are handy if you think you might need to change the angle of the view. The swivels move from right to left, and this is nice if your comfortable chair is not centered before the set.

Once you have established where you want to place the set and have selected a mounting kit, you are ready to begin. Take the back bracket mount and position it so that all screw holes line up with studs and the bracket is level. Using a pencil, mark where the screws will need to go and then attach the bracket to the wall. Make one more check to be sure that it is totally level. Attach the rest of the mounting kit to the back of the set and lift into place, sliding it onto the wall track. Center the set and then tighten all screws on the bottom of the track.
