This does not give us the real feeling of something being far away though, it is an idea rather than a perception.
In the real world we actually get the realistic appearance of depth, and the reason we do is because we have two eyes. To be able to coordinate the position of something in three dimensions, you need two different perspectives on it or else you will not be getting enough information. We get those different perspectives by way of having two eyes, and this information is combined in the brain in order to present us with a three dimensional reality. So that is what has got to be created by 3D technology, two different perspectives from a single screen.
How 3D Glasses Imitate Depth

What the stereoscopic glasses have to do is make it so that each eye receives a different image from the other one, so that the brain can combine them to create the illusion of depth. That way the brain gets two different perspectives, one from each eye, and the illusion of depth can be created.
