Why do some new shelf stereo systems have the power supply built into one of the speakers?
I was at Bestbuy today and noticed that some of the mini systems from Philips and Panasonic have the power supply built into one of the speakers. In other words, you plug the speaker into the wall outlet and then run an extra wire to the control unit for power. Why not just keep the power supply inside the control unit where it belongs? I wanted to mount my system on the wall, but with this design, I’d have a fat power cord running to one of the speakers and an extra wire heading back to the control unit.
Depending on the size of the main unit it could very well be to keep the size of the system down. Since the speakers are big enough to enclose the converter without too much work it could be that or they need to keep the heat inside the unit down.
